Frequently Asked
Questions
Revision 1.0 - 1/10/2005
Q: Where is it happening?
A: The Rush Campground, in the
Buffalo River National Park.
Q: How do I get there?
A: Here's the basic directions,
some map images, and GPS coordinates. If you're
good at getting lost, you're strongly
encouraged to have a road atlas or state road map handy and review or
print the map images listed below. If you can, travel with the rest of
the crew - a convoy is scheduled to depart the Shagpalace at 12:00pm on
the 14th. (I would mention we're almost always late, and it's usually
my fault, but that would jinx it, wouldn't it?)
Directions:
- Take Highway 65 to Marshall.
- Take Highway 27 to Harriet.
- Take Highway 14 to the hwy 26
junction.
- Take Highway 26 to entrance to
Buffalo River Wilderness Area.
- Continue on the road to Rush Landing.
Links to Maps and Stuff (still
under construction, please stay tuned):
- The National Park web page
describing the campsites.
- A very nice PDF
map of the entire Buffalo River National Park. (Use Acrobat
Reader to view the map.) Look for "Rush Landing" in the Lower
Buffalo Wilderness Area. If you only look at one map in this section,
look at this one!
- Yahoo's map
of "Rush, AR" and the surrounding area. Zoom in and play with it a
little - trust me. Be advised that we're headed to Rush Landing, which
is further down the road from Rush, AR. Confused? Good.
- A topographic map
from the Hwy 14/Hwy 26 junction to Rush
Landing, with markers that correspond to the GPS waypoints.
- The GPS waypoints. You shouldn't need these,
but it wouldn't
be FYAO if I wasn't obsessed with finding the place in zero-zero fog :)
. If you do use them, make sure your GPS is set to use the same map
datum that the waypoints use (NAD 27) or you may get confusing results.
Q: What happens at FYAO?
A: Mostly eating, sleeping, playing
guitar, singing, goofing off, boozing, and cooking. If any
nature trails present themselves we sometimes take a short hike.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Not much at all. No fees are
charged at this camp site during the winter. It's really just your gas,
food, and any other consumables, provided you already have basic
camping gear and some really warm clothes. BTW, if you want to go but
need a piece of equipment, let
me know! We may have some
extra gear you can use, no money down.
